Kinect for Windows V2

Kinect is a motion-sensing device released by Microsoft that could be used for XBOX 360 Video Game and Windows (Crawford, n.d.). Kinect’s input which is a camera was developed by PrimeSense, an Israeli developer that developed a system that is able to interpret movement, thus enabling hands-free control on electronic devices by incorporating infrared, camera projectors, and microchip to detect 3-dimensional movement (Schramm, 2010). Sadly Microsoft has discontinued Kinect production but they are currently developing Microsoft’s Hololens which is a step up from Kinect (Dwan, 2017). However the Kinect that managed to be coped with this project is the Kinect Windows v2, and there is Unity plugin available to employ the Kinect.

Uses

The initial purpose of Kinect was to be a hands-free gesture input for video game control. However, developers and many multimedia designers have been exploring and incorporating it for other uses such as interactive exhibitions as it is convenient and advanced. Scientists and engineers were testing and developing Kinect to create a potential breakthrough on biomechanical applications before the device were discontinued (Bonnechère et al., 2012).

Limitations

Kinect does not really collect accurate segment lengths when the object is moving. Thus in order for Kinect to obtain a precise result, it needs calibration (Bonnechère et al., 2012). Without an accurate segment sensor result, the sensitivity of the Kinect is also interrupted.
